Description
A fine South Italian Gnathian twin handled black ware kylix, with a shallow
tapering body and small foot. It features a band of white painted ovolo
decoration to the rim, beneath are tendrils of vines. The reverse shows
a similar decoration. Apulia, Greek South Italy, 4th Century B C

The polychrome motifs and patterns on this skyphos, created by applying yellow and white directly on top of black gloss before the vessel was fired, are characteristic of the “Gnathian style”. The term is derived from the ancient name of the site of Gnathia where a great many examples have been discovered.
